What is Expressive Arts Therapy?

Expressive Arts Therapy harnesses creativity to uncover your strengths in overcoming life's challenges. Through art forms like drawing, painting, singing, and dancing, we connect with deep feelings, that might be tough to put in words.  Additionally, if desired, we can integrate cooking, gardening and home decor to harmonize your interests with your lifestyle and tackle everyday challenges.

How many sessions do I need to commit to ?

You are not required to commit to a certain number of sessions. I offer One-Off Sessions, along with packages of 2 to 3 sessions, and ongoing sessions as needed, all customized to meet your goals and needs during our time together!

What to expect in a session?

I recommend starting with a free 30-minute Discovery Session to explore what we can accomplish together. If you decide to continue, our first session will focus on discussing your goals for future sessions.

I typically offer packages of 1 to 3 sessions that include art-based such as music, movement, painting, writing, or lifestyle arts like cooking and home decor. You can also choose talk therapy at any time if prefer to express yourself verbally.

How do you use Expressive Arts in Therapy?

Our creative journey is an engaging experience, whether we’re analyzing data in an Excel sheet, preparing a meal, building meaningful connections, or creating art.  No matter what we do, we encounter the same challenges and make use of our unique resources in the same way. Expressive Arts Therapy focuses on exploring your challenges and discovering your strengths through art-based experiences, while also promoting self-awareness to enhance your daily life. Imagine using movement to find your rhythm, music to connect with your passions, cooking to awaken your senses and memories, decorating your space into a welcoming environment, capturing new perspectives through photography, and writing to reshape your story. Let’s embark on this meaningful journey together!

Do I need to have Art Experience?

No previous art experience is required. We use a low-skill, high-sensitivity approach that works well for both experienced artists and beginners. This technique focuses on the creative journey than the final product.

Will you teach me how to make art?

I won’t be teaching you how to create art. Instead, I aim to enhance your artistic journey by inviting you to explore various art forms. Engaging in artistic expression can broaden your perspective, allowing you to dream and potentially manifest the reality you desire. Additionally, many participants discover that their artistic skills naturally improve simply by creating and sharing creative experiences together during our sessions.

Where will the sessions take place?

I offer in-person in my creative space, sessions in nature, your home or studio if you prefer, and  online, on Salt Spring Island and in Greater Vancouver. I'm also willing to travel anywhere on Vancouver Island or the Mainland.

Clients often find meeting in their own environment helpful, as it provides tools for direct change in their surroundings. This is especially useful for those facing motivation or mobility challenges. If home or studio isn’t suitable, we can meet in nature, at my creative space, or another location.

If I opt for in home session, how do I prepare my place for the sessions?

It's best to locate a somewhat private area in your home or workspace, away from high traffic zones. If you share your space with family housemates, kindly ask them not to interrupt you during the session. For lifestyle arts sessions, you can cook in the kitchen, decorate your chosen room, or garden outside.. A certain level of privacy will still be necessary.

What does a lifestyle art session look like?

Lifestyle arts, including routines, cooking, decorating, organizing, fashion, and gardening, are vital creative processes in our daily lives. Together, we'll seek inspiration and harmony, exploring food and personal memories, planting seeds for new beginnings, and creating calming spaces for reflection.

Our focus is on enhancing self-awareness and finding joy in daily life, leading to subtle changes or stunning transformations. Ultimately, this journey of self-discovery can foster new careers, fresh starts, and deeper relationships. These sessions often bring moments of laughter along with heartfelt emotions.

What will a nature session look like?

Outdoor sessions take place in nature, where we can enjoy Self and Natureative Walks, explore through movement, photography, and work with different textures, among other activities. Engaging with our surroundings and connecting with our senses can be a valuable teacher for deep learning and connection. Additionally, outdoor experiences can also happen in your backyard or patio.

What kind of material do I need and do you provide it?

We can be creative with materials from your home, like empty cans, paper, and pencils. In-person, I’ll provide paint, instruments, and brushes at no cost. Feel free to bring extra materials. For online meetings, just let me know what you have, and we’ll work with that.

Will my health insurance cover your services?

As an accredited RTC with ACCT, my services are typically covered by Alberta Blue Cross, ClaimSecure, ComPsych, Equitable Life of Canada, Manulife, Pacific Blue Cross, and SunLife. However, since coverage can differ with individual plans I recommend verifying with your insurer directly.
